Japan’s Opposition Party Appoints New Leader

(MENAFN) Japan’s principal opposition group announced on Friday the selection of its new head following a significant loss in recent parliamentary polls, according to a report by a news agency.

The Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA) has named Junya Ogawa, 54, as its leader, in anticipation of a special parliamentary session next week where the nation’s prime minister will be chosen after a decisive triumph for the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the news agency stated.

Ogawa previously held the position of secretary general within the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ).

The CRA was established in January, bringing together members of the CDPJ and Komeito’s lower house just weeks before the snap general elections.

Nevertheless, the CRA faced a severe reversal, losing over half of the 167 seats it had maintained before Sunday’s lower house vote.

This electoral disappointment led the party’s co-leaders, Yoshihiko Noda, former head of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, and Tetsuo Saito, previously leader of Komeito, to resign and accept accountability.

The newly appointed leader will serve a term extending through the end of March of next year.
