Japan to provide refueling support to S. Korean military planes
The mission involves the South Korean Black Eagles aerobatic team, which is scheduled to stop briefly at Naha Air Base in Okinawa on January 28 before continuing to Saudi Arabia for an international defense exhibition. Another refueling operation at the same base is planned when the team returns to South Korea in late February.
The operation had been initially planned last November but was canceled after Japan objected to South Korea conducting military drills near the disputed islands known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea.
Japan and South Korea currently lack an agreement for the exchange of defense supplies and logistical support, known as an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement. Under the Self-Defense Forces Act, however, Japan can provide fuel at no cost to foreign aircraft landing at its military bases.
