Saltwater fish sets breaking record at Tokyo fish market
The 243-kilogram (536-pound) bluefin tuna, caught off the coast of Oma in Aomori Prefecture, was bought by Kiyomura Corp., the company behind the popular Sushizanmai sushi chain.
“The year's first tuna brings good luck. We hope as many people as possible can enjoy it and feel energized,” said Kiyomura President Kiyoshi Kimura, highlighting the symbolic importance of the purchase.
The prized fish will be prepared at Sushizanmai’s Tsukiji flagship branch and distributed to its restaurants nationwide. Despite paying a record price, the company plans to sell the tuna at standard menu prices.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, this year’s bid marks the highest in the auction’s history since comparable records began in 1999. The event showcased a variety of tuna and featured lively competition among bidders, attracting numerous international visitors.
Bidding at the first auction of the year is traditionally aggressive, as buyers believe it brings good fortune and provides a valuable marketing opportunity for restaurants.
