Japan’s PM reveals willingness to talk with China despite tensions
Describing China as an “important neighbor,” Sanae Takaichi said her “stance of building constructive and stable relations remains unchanged” since assuming office. Speaking after an extraordinary parliamentary session, she emphasized that dialogue continues to be a viable option. “Japan always keeps the door open for dialogue as the two nations have issues to resolve,” she added.
Takaichi also sought to clarify her earlier comments regarding regional security, stating, “My remarks regarding the survival-threatening situation do not alter the stance held by the past governments.” She said Japan would continue to convey its position to both China and the broader international community through established diplomatic channels.
Relations between Tokyo and Beijing have grown more strained since Nov. 7, when Takaichi said that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could be considered a “survival-threatening situation” under Japanese law, potentially enabling Japan to invoke the right of collective self-defense.
China responded sharply to the remarks and introduced a series of countermeasures, including advising its citizens against traveling to Japan and halting seafood imports.
In a separate development, Japan’s defense minister held a telephone conversation with his British counterpart, according to official statements. During the call, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi “explained China’s radar illumination to SDF aircraft on Dec 6,” and both sides “shared their resolve to address challenges in Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific and to drive the new golden age of defense cooperation.”
Tokyo has previously stated that on Dec. 7, Chinese J-15 fighter jets launched from the aircraft carrier Liaoning locked radar systems onto two Japanese F-15 aircraft while flying over international waters southeast of Okinawa’s main island.
