Japanese news agency protests over unlicensed use of articles by AI firm
In a letter sent Monday, Kyodo News President Toshimitsu Sawai urged PAI to immediately stop using articles published on the 47 News website and provide compensation for the damages incurred, warning that legal action would follow if the company does not comply.
The letter claims that PAI repeatedly accessed and reproduced Kyodo News articles hundreds of thousands of times over the past year, starting in August 2024, without permission. Kyodo also alleges that PAI’s generated content contains errors while citing the agency, which has harmed the reputation and trustworthiness of the Tokyo-based wire service.
Kyodo News argues that PAI’s actions violate its reproduction rights and constitute unfair competition under the Japanese Unfair Competition Prevention Act. The agency condemned the company’s use of its content without licensing or royalties, warning that such copyright infringements threaten the integrity of accurate journalism and democratic reporting.
There was no immediate response from Perplexity AI regarding the allegations.
